Eye Change Doll Comparisons - Blythe, Little Big Eyes, Beauty Cuties & Diva Starz

Another request from Lorraine over at Dolls More Dolls, this time she wanted to see the differences between  my Colour Change Eyed Dolls face plates, so I took some and here they are!

Since I  originally posted these pictures in Dolls More Dolls on Multiply, in 2009, there have been a lot more "Colour Change Eye Dolls" or "CCE's" as they are sometimes know, so  guess at some time soon, I should spend a while and do a few more comparison posts on what;s available now...

(As far as I'm aware not all Diva Dolls have changeable eye colour, the Barbie-size one talks, but doesn't have eye colour change option, I have a little one, that does tho'...the way it works is you twist the head from side to side and the eye colour changes!)

At the time of this post being posted in Dolls More Dolls, I didn't have any Diva Starz dolls, except a small one which I had purchased but it hadn't arrived at the time! I had never even seen the doll up close, so I was unable to really comment, I included these dolls in the post though as I was aware some had the "Colour change eye" function.

Photo was taken from an Ebay listing as I didn't have Diva Starz doll at the time, but as it was on Lorraine's "Show me List" I had to include them somehow! I guess I should really get around to photographing my own ones and re-doing these photos at some point, but now for a while I'm afraid!

Beauty Cutie: Her head's larger than Blythe’s, her body is so much smaller too...this makes these dolls kinda top-heavy lol

Change eye colour by pressing the top of the head, the eyes change from side-glance brown, to forward blue (with purple dots and green stars!), side-glance purple and side-glance green, though the colours and eye-pattern varies slightly between dolls.

When bought boxed The Beauty Cuties come with a selection of cosmetics and hair extensions and a stand.

The dolls come in a choice of 3 hair colours..

Rockabelle is blonde.

Glamalina is brunette.

Lovelylu is auburn.

Points to note... The eye change mechanism makes a weird noise when pressed...

The doll's feet are large and oddly shaped so unless you have the original shoes for her, you may have trouble finding replacements.

The doll's body is very small so Barbie clothes won't fit, some Bratz ones do though!

These dolls are brilliant to photograph although due to their large & weighty head they do need to be positioned carefully!

Aston Drake Galleries In The Medieval Mood Reproduction Blythe

Aston Drake Galleries reproduction Blythe dolls have the draw string on back of the head, which you pull for eye colour changes. This doll is an exact replica of the original 1972 Blythe Dolls made and distributed by Kenner, but much cheaper.

The first 4 ADG Blythe doll range where made in 2005 - 2006, using the original moulds used by Kenner for their Blythe dolls, the line of dolls is also the same with their original outfits and names also reproduced. The boxes are also an exact replica of the original Blythe doll Boxes, they come with a Certificate of Authentication. In 2007 a second release of 5 more "Original Blythe" reproductions, again for one year only,and are never to be reproduced again.

Some Blythe Dolls (Made by Hasbro and Takara) have the big button at the back of the head this is the same as Little Big Eyes / Designer Girls, eye change mechanism.

Produced for less than 1 year, in 2001, discontinued (for legal reasons)

STREET WISE DESIGNS Produced these dolls.

The eye colours are very similar to Blythe dolls, the difference being that the change is made by pressing the large button on the back of the head, instead of using a pull string.

These dolls were marketed under the name Little Big Eyes But there are also the exact same dolls by the same company marketed under the name Designer Girls...Both are now sadly Retired.

There are mini versions available although  quite rare, but personally I don't like them...the faces are different to the  12 inch dolls and the eyes do not change colour.

Series 1 Hair Colour variations: Cerise, Purple, Black, Bright Yellow.

Series 2 Hair Colour Variations: Auburn, Blonde, Light Brown, Dark Brown ...

Series 2: Also has a Dark Skinned version of this doll...

All face moulds are identical in both series and skin tones.

Whats Her Name - Fab Faces Doll By Mattel
2002 - Now Retired...

Instead of the stamps and markers used for previous "What's Her Face" lines, these Dolls have a traditionally painted face, and come with three different snap-on face masks painted with different expressions.
Eye Colour and Expression is changed by pressing a button on the back of her head.

The dolls have articulated elbows and knees, and an improved hip joint that allowed them to cross their legs when seated.

They each came with two streaked wigs, and their costumes could be decorated by using small button-like beads to add rows of lace, fur, or fringe.

The feet are larger than Barbie's and flat so it is not easy to get shoes in the right size :(

She comes with face masks so you can change her expressions... I could only remember where I put 2 of them in time for the photos though!

Another set of  Height Comparison pictures - Requested by Lorraine on Dolls More Dolls ...

She wanted to see the Height differences between my Mattel Beauty Cutie, Mattel What's Her Face, Aston Drake Galleries Blythe, Little Big Eyes and Blythe Petite Dolls, so here they are!

Just before I show you, I have to tell you why Beauty Cutie looks like she's doing the splits in every photo! It's pretty simple really, I bought my girl from a Seller in Canada, she was unboxed and came with only her stock outfit, had I have bought her in her box (a very hard task these days) she would have come to me with a stand. I do not have a suitable stand to use when posing her for pictures right now, so I made her stand up as best I could. As Lorraine already has her own Beauty Cutie Doll, it didn't really matter too much to her as she already knows the height dimensions of this doll. If however you do not have one and would like that info, please let me know and I'll either update this post or leave you a comment letting you know!

Still a work in progress I'm afraid...I decided to make her the wig myself....and I am currently spending a few hours at a time sewing small clumps of saran into the wig-cap!

As you can guess it's laborious to say the least...but I'm sure it will be worth it!

She's still on course to be an Elfen Lied "Lucy / Nyuu" ...not too sure if I'll be giving her a face paint and eyelashes yet...will have to see how it goes once the wig is done and I've got round to finding or making her some tiny clothes!

In December 2008, I ordered the components to make myself a Dolfie, once they arrive from Hong Kong (Mimiwoo) and I begin working on it I'll keep you all posted on how it's coming along...I'm hoping to find some little elf ears for her...she's gonna be so cute.......Wooooohooo!!

Out of all the heads Mimiwoo had on offer, this one really stood out for me, I kept on finding myself going back to it for another look, in the end I accepted fate and clicked buy it now!

I wanted her to have a body that was not too big and didn't have massive great big boobies, so I opted for this  23cm  body, her bust is I guess you'd say earlier teens as she has breast bumps, but not over developed  I see Lucy & Nyuu as both being very naive and childlike characters in same ways, so this body seemed to be the perfect accompaniment to that stunning head... another Buy It Now click and it was mine!

Now for the eyes... I had no idea what I was going to do there, as Lucy / Nyuu has typical "Manga style" eyes, but although I could have bought a head that I could have painted or transferred them onto I really didn't like them very much, and so I decided upon more human looking eyes, in quite a neutral colour, but a neutral colour with a quirk!

Sapphire &  Ruby - Ooak Bratz Baby Cyber Goth Doll (Twins)

Sapphire:

Her face was stripped of factory features and re-painted using acrylic paint, then sealed. 

The moulded plastic hair was painted black and given cobalt blue highlights then sealed.

The dress was hand sewn from a pattern designed by myself.

Dread falls were made using a mixture of synthetic human hair extensions and brown spun yarn and unspun blue fleece.I added Black"nail varnish to her hands and feet, which was ten sealed then I hand-made sliver dice and black beaded earrings to finish off her look

 RUBY:

produced in the same way as Sapphire.

The Only real difference between the two, apart from colour choices and eye paint is Ruby has 3 bunches at the back of her head.

The Dread falls on each doll were placed in the holes from which the factory moulded bunches were removed.

 As Bought - Her face was in need of a repaint, eyes were dull and scratched. Face paint was faded and scratched off in parts, she was nekkid and suffering form a very bad case of Attic-Bed Head! Which came with a very musty odour too!

I started by washing her hair, several times, styled and dried it, then added a strawberry scent to it.

After that I started on the face paint.

Then I made her a tight fitting cat suit, complete with tail and Voila...One "Custard" doll to go with my near- perfect Strawberry Shortcake Doll!

Recent Bargains - 05 / 02 / 2009

2 x 1970s Charlie's Angels dolls - bought for £1.80 for the pair!

                                               Vintage 1970's Amtoy fashion Doll - cost 99p!

                                             2 x Cybermen Bought for £3.00 for the pair!

                                                   Fairykite Doll bought for 29p!

Mystery Machine with Shaggy & Scooby - bought for 20p! Sadly it is missing one of the front doors, but that doesn't really bother me as I've wanted one of these for ages, ever since visiting my friend Sasha and falling in love wit her one!

Vintage (1960's or 1970's) Soda-Pop Doll - these dolls came inside a bottle, but that's really all I know about them :( still for 99p she was an absolute "Have to have" and looks great in my Triang Doll's House!

I went to my Mum's and asked her if I could have the "Woody" that belonged to my Niece when she was little ... only to find that my parents puppy Dodger, had taken a liking to him and chewed his beak off! Anyhoo, after being totally gutted by this and searching for ages on Ebay, I found another one, I bought him for £1.50.  He's by Pedigree although in some ways he looks very similar to Sekiguchi type toys.

Vintage Tiny Tears Doll Plug & Neck Assembly & Head Removal for Repairs

If you're experiencing problems with your Vintage Tiny Tears Doll, this Page from a 1960s or 1970s (can't remember which decade) book on How To Run Your Own Business As a DOLL HOSPITAL, may be of some help to you...also information posted below image on Head removal.

The small writing at the top of the page reads ... "If my diaper does not wet after I have taken my bottle, look for a tiny opening just below the small of my back. Mother will pus it open wit a pin or clip"

Removing / Replacing Tiny Tears Head with another one:

After all, it's all well and good having a diagram to show you the insides workings, or you may have another better, head to replace the old one with... but if you can't figure out how to safely remove the head, you have a problem!

Well then, it's lucky for you that I found this info too!

***WARNING***

1) It isn't hard to do this but you may create a problem once it's done... The doll may not drink or wet again because the rubber connector will, in most cases be broken in the switch over...

So you do this at your own risk (personally I've not done this since I was about 6 years old!) But I did find some info, so here goes:-

2) Apparently a broken rubber connector isn't really a problem as you shouldn't really use this feature because this is what normally caused the bodies to deteriorate in the Rubber- Bodied Tiny Tears.

3) All you have to do is hold onto the body, close to the neck and gently pull. It sometimes helps to warm up the rubber with a hair dryer to make it more pliable, and less likely to tear...

*** Again I advise caution with the air dryer, don't hold it too close and don't use it for more than a few seconds at a time or it may melt :( ***

Personally I would try holding the head in some warm ( not hot) water for a few mins, or gently pouring it along the neck / head join.

4) Then you would have to put the new head on the body, reversing the process... It sometimes helps to rub a little mineral oil on the neck opening in the head, and on the neck (flange) of the body before trying to replace the head. This will make the head application much easier.
